Leadership Beyond the Workplace: Angela Arneson’s Journey with Leadership Fargo Moorhead West Fargo (LFMWF)

  |     |   Goldmark News

Leadership is crucial in the workplace, but it’s equally vital in the communities we serve. Angela Arneson, Director of Talent and Engagement at Goldmark Property Management, shares her transformative experience as a member of the 2023-24 Leadership Fargo Moorhead West Fargo (LFMWF) Class. This prestigious program empowers local leaders to make a difference in the Fargo-Moorhead community.

What is Leadership Fargo Moorhead West Fargo (LFMWF)?

For over 30 years, the LFMWF program has been developing and uplifting community leaders in the Fargo, Moorhead, and West Fargo areas. Each year, 40 individuals are selected for a 10-month leadership development program focused on addressing key regional issues and fostering community engagement. Angela’s participation in this program provided her with valuable insights and experiences that she brings back to Goldmark and Sterling.

Q: How did you grow as a leader during this 10-month program?

Angela: Although I’ve served in leadership roles for over a decade, the LFMWF program offered me a fresh perspective on what it means to be a leader in the Fargo-Moorhead community. Growing up in Fertile, MN, I always dreamed of moving to a bigger city, and while Fargo fulfilled that dream, I sometimes felt "stuck." But through this program, I discovered a renewed passion for Fargo-Moorhead.

I connected with local leaders, explored new businesses, and gained insights that deepened my appreciation for our vibrant community. This experience has made me proud to be a leader here, and I no longer feel “stuck”—instead, I feel more connected than ever.

Q: What were some key insights you gained from the Leadership FMWF program?

Angela: One of the most valuable aspects of the LFMWF program was the opportunity to network with other professionals in the Fargo-Moorhead area. I built strong relationships with leaders from diverse industries, such as Alec, a Master Arborist with Fargo Parks, and Barbara, a Director at the Rape and Abuse Crisis Center. These connections provided me with fresh insights and new approaches to leadership that I now apply every day at Goldmark.

Q: Describe a challenge in your region that your leadership can help solve.

Angela: The LFMWF program highlighted the significant role that non-profits play in the Fargo-Moorhead community. Hearing from leaders of organizations like Farm in the Dell and Lutheran Social Services was eye-opening. It reminded me that volunteering time is as impactful as financial donations. As a leader, I’m inspired to contribute to these organizations through both service and leadership.

Q: How has the program most impacted your leadership at Goldmark?

Angela: One of the key takeaways from the program was understanding different communication styles. We completed assessments that helped me better identify and adapt to the communication preferences of others. As someone with a “talker” communication style, I’ve learned to be more mindful of how I engage with my team, improving our collaboration at Goldmark.

Q: Who would you suggest take the Leadership FMWF program?

Angela: The LFMWF program is ideal for anyone in the Fargo-Moorhead area who wants to enhance their leadership skills and contribute to the community. You don’t need a formal leadership title to apply. If you’re passionate about personal and professional growth, I highly recommend giving it a try and applying. I’m excited that our own Nicki Sneed will be joining the class of 2025 next year—congratulations, Nicki!

Q: Is there anything else you'd like to share about your time in this program?

Angela: The LFMWF program encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and say “yes” to new opportunities. This has been a significant factor in my growth as a leader, and I’m excited to continue embracing challenges in both my personal and professional life.
